Announcement – What Comes Next
So, to be honest, there’s a lot of things that are ‘coming next.’ I want to get back to writing Naughty Magic and Hatching a Heroine for one thing – and maybe get around to sharing my fanfic of Stray Cat Strut with you guys, as well… I also have a couple vague ideas for DQ one-shots running in my brain – but then again, I also have to finish the slime girl trio of stories, and I owe some commission pieces…. On top of that, I’m planning to start editing Demon Queened so that I can release a ‘remastered’ version on Amazon. (Patrons of the $5+ tiers will get a free copy of the ebooks, by the way.)
All that said, what I want to talk about is The Sequel. …Not that my ideas for that are 100% concrete, either. I know the base of what I want to write, and I have the seeds for two main characters, but I’ll be honest and say that I’m not entirely sure what sort of story it’ll grow into. Probably more slice of life?
The basic concept, though, is that I want to write about the twins – specifically after they turn twenty years old.
One of them thinks she knows what she wants in this world. She wants to take over the throne, and give her parents (mostly Abigail) some much needed time off.
The other… has no idea. Which her parents are fine with! They encourage her to figure it out at her own pace.
In fact, before either of them decide what to do with the rest of their lives, they’re to go outside the tower and spend a year traveling. Getting to know the world outside, and seeing what it has to offer before tying themselves down to anything.
Through them, we’ll be exploring the world of Solla – tugging at plot threads and ideas the first series never got to follow up (or in some cases even touch upon.) We’ll see what’s changed in the 20+ years since Demon Queened’s end – and what has, for better or worse, remained the same…
As for the twins, I… honestly don’t even have names for them yet. But I do know who they are as people.
The one who wants to take over the throne? She’s confident. A bit full of herself at times. Secretly wishes that her parents didn’t love her and her sister equally, and sometimes thinks it’s unfair that she’s working so hard much harder and yet getting equal treatment.
Usually confident, she’s a bit of a fish out of water when taken out of the tower. Not that she’ll willingly admit it.
The other sister is… pretty much chill about the throne going to her twin. But she doesn’t really know where that leaves her? She doesn’t know what she’s doing with her life, where she’s going, what she wants…
She has spent more time on the lower floors of the tower than her sister, though – her sister and her both used to ‘sneak out’ (they were more or less allowed to go, on the grounds that nothing could actually harm them). But one of them ‘stopped that childish behavior’ and the other kept it up, and now the one who’s usually aimless finds herself best suited for leading life outside the tower, whether her sister wants to admit it or not. And she doesn’t entirely know what to do about that.
It’s basically going to be a series about self-discovery and exploration, taking place upon the broad stage of the world over a span of at least one in-universe year. (I’ll have to try and keep track of days, I guess…)
If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, don’t worry – I’m writing plenty of other things, and expect to continue to be struck by occasional ideas that refuse to leave me alone until I eventually get to them…
The working title is “Double Trouble” by the way, but it’s very much a work in progress…
